First think about your needs...
- Would you like your home to feel graceful and inviting when you are throwing a party?
- Would your day start off better if you had an ideal spot to have your cup of coffee and read the morning paper?
- Do you need a retreat for yourself, someplace to relax into at the end of a long day?
- Do you need a place to get extra work done that is away from family distractions?
- Would you like your home to be reflective of your character, desires and outlook?
Your home can be something uniquely yours.
It can be something which you will be eager to return to.
Whether you are remolding your current home or looking at buying a new one there are many things to consider. Listed below are questions that will help both when looking at new properties and when thinking about your current home.
Working with you and your agent.
Is the neighborhood great but the home not all you wished for? Sometimes the best time to think about remodeling is before you have purchased a home.
We can look at options, the feasibility of alterations or additions, and determine the seriousness of structural or mechanical problems with an existing building.
Things to consider when looking at a prospective home:
- Look at the home with an eye to see whether there is a core set of spaces and relationships that can work to create the home you want.
- Look at neighborhood, are the amenities and services you want and need provided? Are the zoning and covenants going to help maintain those features into the future?
What is the home’s orientation?
- Is the sun going to bathe key parts of the home with light first thing in the morning? Can it easy be modified to get that light?
- Is the driveway going to be in shade most of the day and stay frozen in the winter?
- Is traffic noise a potential problem and is there any way to mitigate it?
How well does the yard function?
- Do the home and yard feel connected or isolated? Can that be easily fixed?
- Is the yard well lit and sheltered from the wind?
- Will there be a good location for outdoor dining in the summer?
- Is there a view and is it taken advantage of?
- Again If noise a potential problem - is there any way to mitigate it?
How do the living areas work together?
- Is there a sense of interconnectivity and a comfortable flow through them?
- Are the spaces taking advantage of the views and yard?
- Can these things be easily brought about?
Do the bedrooms and more private areas of the home work well?
- Is the proximity of adult space to child space going to work well?
- How does the separation from the more public parts of the home feel?
- Is there an adequate play area for children?
- Is there a good space for a home office or two, or a way to easily achieve them?
How is the home built?
- If changes are needed can they be made easily, or will the structural or mechanical issues be expensive to overcome?
Some homes may need very little work to accommodate your needs and some a quite a bit more. Sometimes, if the location and orientation are the only aspects of the home that matter, we will start from scratch or radically alter what’s there to suite. Other times it’s a minor tweak here or there and the home can come together easily to meet your needs.
After you have narrowed down your list of properties we can walk through and discuss your concerns and needs to develop a quick outline of options and recommendations. If the scope is more substantial I can provide a quick study of the potential alterations and give you a good idea of potential costs.
